Southside Solidification Services

Why Solidification?

To preserve the integrity of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills, USEPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) prohibit landfills from accepting free liquids for disposal. Through the solidification process offered by Southside Solidification Services however, an alternative for the safe disposal of non-hazardous liquids and sludges is now available. Instead of paying expensive solid surcharges to commercial wastewater treatment and disposal facilities, solidification offers a cost-effective alternative.

What is the solidification process?

Southside Solidification Services may accept all non-hazardous, non-regulated materials containing free liquids. Wastes are solidified in an approximately 30,000 gallon concrete pit utilizing a variety of non-hazardous media including saw dust, fly ash, corn cobs, or limestone dust. Once the wastes are solidified and can pass a “paint filter test,” the treated material is landfilled at Southside Landfill within disposal cells meeting or exceeding Subtitle D standards.

What wastes can be solidified?

Acceptable wastes include oil/water separator sludges, paint sludges, waste water treatment plant sludges, ink sludges, UST sludges, grease trap waste or any non-hazardous wastes which do not pass a paint filter test in their current state.

What is the process for accepting wastes for disposal?

Wastes suitable for solidification must first comply with Southside Landfill’s industrial, special or solid waste programs. A complete laboratory analyses may be required depending on the type or source of the waste stream. All wastes must be properly profiled and approved for acceptance prior to scheduling and delivery of waste materials to the facility.
